Laid out in 1967 and named after former President Zakir Hussain, this garden in central Chandigarh is described as the largest rose garden in Asia. It covers more than 30 acres and holds about 50,000 rose bushes of some 1,600 varieties, from miniatures and hybrid teas to floribundas and climbers. Medicinal trees such as bel, bahera, harar, camphor and yellow gulmohar grow alongside them, and a bonsai garden and cactus house were added in 2003.
The grounds include a circular amphitheatre for concerts and plays, gazebos for shade and a number of sculptures. Flowering peaks in February, when the garden hosts the yearly Rose Festival with food stalls, rides, competitions and music, dance and theatre.
