The story

Gurdwara Mehdiana Sahib, sometimes called the School of Sikh History, stands in the village of Mehdiana near Mallha and Jagraon in Ludhiana district, Punjab. Sikhs hold that Guru Gobind Singh and his companions rested here after escaping the siege of Chamkaur in 1705, bathing at the natural reservoir (dhaab), and that his followers asked him here to write the Zafarnamah, which he composed soon after at Chakkar.

Until the late 1960s the spot was thick forest. From 1972 Jathedar Jora Singh Lakha developed it into a 25-acre complex, now known for Meenakari ornamentation and for sculptures by Tara Singh depicting Sikh history: warriors, women and children tortured by the Mughals, and Bhai Kanhaiya giving water to wounded soldiers of both sides. Twenty paintings by Kirpal Singh are also displayed, and the dhaab, trees and birds add to its appeal. Some parts have become run-down through a shortage of funds.
