Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple is a Shiva shrine on the seashore of Fudam village, 3 km from Diu, facing the Arabian Sea. It is essentially a cave temple set among the rocks of the shore, which has also earned it the name Seashore Temple. Inside the cave are images of Ganesha, Vishnu and Lakshmi, and beyond them five Shiva lingas of different sizes sit in the sea water; they are usually covered at high tide and can be seen only at low tide. A carving of the serpent Sheshnag on the rock above watches over the lingas.
Tradition holds that the Pandavas set up the temple and the five lingas to worship Shiva daily during their exile, the largest being made by Bhima, and it calls the shrine 5,000 years old, though no archaeological work has tested this. The name joins Ganga and Ishwar, recalling Shiva as the god who caught the descending Ganga in his hair.
