Shukrawari Lake, also called Gandhi Sagar Lake, Shukravari Talao or Jumma Talao, lies in Nagpur opposite the Raman Science Centre. It is said to have been created by Chand Sultan, then ruler of Nagpur, over 275 years ago as a water source for the town; he had streams diverted to the Nag River to fill a reservoir he named Jumma Talab. The name Shukrawari Talao came into use in the Bhonsla and British periods, after Raghuji I made Nagpur his capital in 1742.
Today stone walls and iron railings enclose the water. A small island sits in the middle of the lake, and around it are a garden locals call the spoon garden, a Shiva temple, and another garden lit with yellow mercury lamps after dark.
