Futala Lake in the western part of Nagpur was built by the Bhosle kings and is about 200 years old. It covers 60 acres, with forest on three sides and a landscaped sand beach on the fourth. For years it was neglected and used only for washing cattle, until a beautification scheme began in 2003.
The lake was desilted and cleared of lotus and rubbish, and a granite-paved walkway, benches, decorative lamps, gardens and parking were added, along with a three-ramp immersion ghat on the south side. Two coloured fountains of 15 feet and a white one of 100 feet now play on the water, and in the evenings the area is lit with halogen lamps and tonga rides are offered. A road was also paved to ease parking for the well-known Hanuman temple nearby. Around 1,000 people visit each day on average.
