01 — The story

The story

Gaitore is a narrow valley beside the road from Jaipur to Amer that served as the cremation ground of the Kachhwaha rulers and their families. Jaipur's founder, Sawai Jai Singh II, chose the site himself, and from his time on each ruler was cremated here and remembered with a cenotaph. The one exception is Sawai Ishwari Singh, whose cremation took place inside the City Palace complex. The name is usually traced to the phrase 'Gaye ka Thor', a resting place for the departed.

The cenotaphs are open, domed pavilions set on raised plinths and built of marble and sandstone, combining Islamic forms with Hindu temple design. Each reflects the taste of the ruler it marks, and faint remains of painted decoration survive on several. The finest is the white marble memorial of Jai Singh II, carved with peacocks; others honour Sawai Madho Singh and Sawai Ram Singh.
