The English Cemetery, also called the British Cemetery, lies at Katargam Darwaja in Surat, a short walk from the city's Dutch Cemetery. It was laid out around 1651, in the period when the East India Company had set up its base in Surat, and holds the graves of Company officials as well as several governors of the Bombay Presidency.
Among those buried here are George Oxenden, Gerald Aungier and Bartholomew Harris, each of whom served as Governor of Bombay. In 1855 Dr George Buist visited the cemetery and recorded a number of its tomb inscriptions.
