Suvali Beach lies on the Arabian Sea coast of Gujarat, a calm stretch of golden sand away from city crowds. Once spelled Suwally, it was the landing point through which the East India Company first entered India. In 1612 Captain Thomas Best beat a Portuguese force here in the Battle of Swally, and the beach is also regarded as the place where the modern Indian Navy was born.
Today it draws people for sunset walks along the water. Migratory birds visit the shore, dolphins are sometimes seen offshore, and the villages nearby offer local food, crafts and folk traditions.
