01 — The story

The story

Dumas Beach lies on the Arabian Sea about 21 kilometres south-west of Surat and is a popular outing in south Gujarat. It is a rural stretch of shore rather than a developed resort, yet Surat Airport is only around 7 kilometres away and Surat Junction railway station roughly 22 kilometres.

The Dariya Ganesh Temple stands beside the main beach. The promenade is lined with stalls selling bhajiya, including the local Lashkari tomato bhajiya, pav bhaji, Indo-Chinese dishes and corn roasted over charcoal, and there are restaurants serving Punjabi and vegetarian food. The beach also carries a reputation as a haunted place, because local belief holds that it was once used as a burial ground, though no new accounts have emerged to support the stories.
