The story

The Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial, also called Mahaparinirvan Bhoomi or Mahaparinirvan Sthal, stands on the site of 26 Alipur Road in Delhi. B. R. Ambedkar moved into a rented bungalow here with his wife Savita after resigning from the cabinet in 1951 over the Hindu Code Bill, and he died there on 6 December 1956. After a later owner evicted Savita Ambedkar in 1967, several of his papers were ruined by rain and the bungalow was knocked down.

The government bought the site in 2003, when Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee laid a foundation, but for years only a neglected makeshift memorial existed. Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the present building on 21 March 2016 and opened it on 13 April 2018, Ambedkar's birth anniversary. The memorial includes a museum with exhibits on Ambedkar's life and work.
