01 — The story

The story

Dimna Lake is an artificial reservoir about 13 km from Jamshedpur, spread over roughly two square miles at the foot of the Dalma range. Tata Steel built the Dimna Dam to ease water shortages in Tatanagar and the surrounding area, and the lake still supplies water to both the steel works and the city. It falls under the Mirzadih panchayat.

Deciduous forest and birdlife ring the water, and between November and February mist often settles over the hills. Visitors come for boating, rowing and jet skiing, and short walks lead into the hills around the lake. Sunrise over the ridge is a popular sight, the approach road runs through rolling green country, and small villages nearby keep a traditional way of life. It is a common weekend outing for local families.
