01 — The story

The story

The Dalma Hills rise along the eastern edge of Jamshedpur, north of the Subarnarekha River, climbing from roughly 300 m to about 1,000 m above sea level. Their thick forest stands in sharp contrast to the industrial city below, and much of it falls within Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, created in 1975 chiefly to protect elephants and covering around 195 sq km.

Besides elephants, whose seasonal movement towards water is a notable sight, the sanctuary shelters leopards, sloth bears, barking deer and porcupines, while birds include peafowl, several parakeets and Indian treepies. Walking trails of varying difficulty cross the forest, and picnic spots and viewpoints look out over Jamshedpur. A Shiva temple stands on the summit, and pilgrims climb to it every year at Shivratri.
