01 — The story

The story

Known locally as the TELCO Bhuvaneshwari Temple, this shrine rises on high ground close to Kharangajhar Market in Jamshedpur, the steel city that lies between the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers. Swami Rangarajan established it in 1978, and it follows the Dravidian manner of South Indian temples, with a river winding through the scenery around it.

The entrance is marked by a five-storey rajagopuram some 64 feet tall, topped with five kalasams. Inside, a mandapam rests on eight pillars, each thought to stand for one of the goddess's forms, and the 32-foot sanctum holds a large image of Bhuvaneshwari, regarded as a form of Parvati. Priests perform worship three times daily following South Indian practice, prasad is handed to visitors, and the raised site looks out over the town.
