01 — The story

The story

Diezephe is a craft village about 13 km from Dimapur where a community of some 500 weavers and artisans lives by handloom work and handicrafts. It grew out of efforts by the Nagaland government and NGOs to create livelihoods through skills training while keeping craft traditions alive, with the Nagaland Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation leading its promotion. In 2023 it won bronze in the Best Tourism Village awards.

Visitors can tour showrooms, weaving sheds and a small craft museum, watch artisans at work and try weaving, pottery or wood carving with local teachers. The village follows a set of green practices, among them planting ten trees per household every year, using natural dyes, recording textile designs and selling directly from artisans to visitors.
