01 — The story

The story

The Daksha Mahadev Temple, also called Daksheshwar Mahadev, stands on the southern edge of Kankhal in Haridwar and is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati. Beside it is the Sati Kund, the sacrificial pit where Sati is said to have burned herself after her father, Daksha Prajapati, refused to accept Shiva and left him out of a yagna. The present structure was built by Queen Dhankaur in 1810 and renovated in 1962.

The legend continues with Shiva sending the warrior Virbhadra to behead Daksha, and later restoring him to life with a goat's head. Devotees perform abhishekam during the monsoon month of Saavan, and Maha Shivaratri and Navratri are the main festivals.
