01 — The story

The story

The Maya Devi Temple honours the patron goddess of Haridwar, which was once known as Mayapuri after her. Built in the 11th century in a plain north Indian style, it is a Shaktipeeth, believed to mark where Goddess Sati's heart and navel fell after Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra cut her body apart during Shiva's grief-stricken wandering. The Narayana-Shila and Bhairava temples stand nearby.

The inner sanctum has three idols: the three-headed, four-armed Maya Devi in the centre, Kali to her left and Kamakhya to her right. A metal image of Chamunda and a small shrine to Sheetala Devi are also housed here, and the walls show the goddess in various postures.
