01 — The story

The story

In the village of Dah Parbatia, a few kilometres west of Tezpur, stands the stone door frame of one of the oldest Hindu temples in Assam. It is thought to date from the 4th or 5th century AD and is an example of the Gupta school of sculpture.

The jambs carry figures of the river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna holding garlands, along with floral designs and religious motifs. In the Ahom period a Shiva temple was raised over the ruins of the original shrine. A severe earthquake later brought the old doorway to light, and after excavation it became a monument protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
