Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary covers 175 square kilometres at the foot of the Himalayas, about 52 kilometres from Tezpur. The British declared it the Sonai Rupai Game Sanctuary in 1934, taking in 85 square miles that belonged to the Charduar Reserve Forest, itself formed in 1878; it became a wildlife sanctuary in 1998. Four rivers run through it, the Gabharu, Gelgeli, Sonai and Rupai, and its name comes from a small river crossing the area.
Its animals include the Indian bison, elephants, tigers, leopards and deer. Resident and migratory birds include white-winged wood ducks and hornbills, and pythons and Russell's vipers are among the reptiles.
