01 — The story

The story

Bharali Naamghar is a prayer hall near Tezpur. The Burmese army burned it during the invasion of Assam between 1817 and 1826, and the local people later rebuilt it. Its central pillar, the Laikhuta, is made from the wood of a holy tulsi tree and stands near the Simhasana, or Guruasana, the platform at the centre of worship. Devotees believe prayers offered here are answered.

The building is plain, with a wooden platform and little decoration, in keeping with the simple style of Assamese devotion. Maghi Purnima brings thousands of devotees, and Janmashtami and Raas Leela are marked with kirtans, music, dance and storytelling.
