Poki, also known as Jyoti Bharati, was the family home of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the poet, playwright, artist, musician, filmmaker and freedom fighter. His grandfather Hari Bilash Agarwala built it in 1874, and it was the first brick (pucca) house in Tezpur. The thick-walled building mixes Rajasthani and Ahom styles around a 50 by 20 courtyard paved with flat stones.
During the freedom movement the house was a meeting place for leaders such as Lala Lajpat Rai, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, and decisions about Assam's politics were taken here. Agarwala also wrote the script of Joymoti, the first Assamese film, in this house.
