Mahabhairab Temple stands on a hill in Tezpur and is dedicated to Shiva in his fierce form. Tradition credits its founding to Banasura, a demon king who worshipped Shiva. The main object of worship is a stone Shiva Linga, said to be the largest of its kind anywhere and admired as a work of early craftsmanship.
Maha Shivratri is the main festival, when thousands of devotees come to pray, light lamps and take part in rituals. From the hilltop there are wide views over the country around Tezpur.
