The story

This museum on the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar road, 19 km from Nashik and 3 km from Anjaneri, is run by the numismatic research institute (IIRNS) on whose grounds it stands. It was set up in 1980 by scholars and collectors of coins, and in 2018 it was enlarged to about 12,000 sq ft and renamed the Shanti-Krishna Museum of Money and History, adding natural history, archaeology and anthropology.

The coin galleries follow Indian currency through time, from punch-marked and cast coins to issues of the Delhi Sultanate, the Malwa sultans, the Mughals and the Holkars. Alongside the coins are moulds, dies, replicas and photographs, machines once used to cast and strike coins, and tableaux showing how minting was done. Bronze and terracotta pieces, copper-hoard finds and paintings are also shown. The institute keeps about a lakh of reference cards for researchers and runs workshops for collectors.
