Both a temple and a Bengali cultural centre, the Chittaranjan Park Kali Mandir sits on a small hill at the edge of Chittaranjan Park in South Delhi. It began in 1973 with a small Shiva temple, which still stands. A large Kali temple in Bengal terracotta style followed in February 1984, then temples to Shiva and to Radha-Krishna, and elaborate terracotta work was added between about 2006 and 2009.
The temple's Durga Puja, held since 1977, is among the most popular in Delhi and draws huge crowds on each of its five days. Flowers typical of Bengal are flown in fresh each day, and whole ponds there are booked ahead to supply blue lotuses for the sandhi puja. A small workshop makes clay images of the goddesses. Kali Puja, Lakshmi Puja and Saraswati Puja are also celebrated, and the society that runs the temple keeps a library of Bengali culture, teaches Bengali and has a guest house.
