01 — The story

The story

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is a major museum in South Mumbai, named after the Maratha ruler Shivaji. Its domed building was completed in 1914, and the museum opened in 1922. It is counted among the leading cultural institutions in the country.

The galleries span a very wide range, from prehistoric finds to modern pieces: sculpture and painting, textiles, Tibetan art and Chinese porcelain sit alongside ancient and contemporary forms. Together they trace the history and art of India and its neighbours over several thousand years, and the museum is a useful stop for anyone interested in history, art or design.
