Chaman Mahal is a palace at Islamnagar, 11 km from Bhopal, built by Dost Mohammad Khan, the Afghan commander who ruled Islamnagar in 1715. Chaman means garden, and the building is also known as the Garden Palace for the charbagh with fountains laid out at its centre. It is sometimes called Islamnagar fort.
The red sandstone structure blends Mughal and Malwa styles, with 12 gates at the entrance, drooping eaves showing Bengali influence and floral ornament on its surfaces. Gardens and fountains surround it. Though now in ruins, the palace still has its Mughal water garden and a hamam, or Turkish bathhouse.
