The story

The Centenary Methodist Church compound on Chapel Road, Abids, holds two churches of the Methodist Church in India. The older is the Methodist Chapel, founded in 1877 by Methodist Episcopal missionaries and said to be the oldest Christian building in Hyderabad. Methodist mission work in the Deccan began in the mid-1800s, and the South India Conference met in the city in 1884. As the congregation grew, the much larger Centenary church was built beside the chapel.

The chapel is a small whitewashed Neo-Gothic building with many spires and buttresses, plaques honouring missionaries of the region and a large stained-glass window behind the altar. Because of its size it has always been called a chapel. The Centenary church, of stone masonry in a contemporary style, seats more than 2,000 and is described as the largest church in Hyderabad by seating, with a lofty nave, a balcony and a tall, pointed bell tower. Services are held in Telugu, English, Hindi, Marathi and Kannada.
