01 — The story

The story

The Butt Road Jumma Masjid, a Friday mosque, stands at Parangimalai on the outskirts of Chennai, 13 km from the city and 2 km from Guindy on the Mount–Poonamallee Road. It serves Muslims living in the suburb and the neighbouring cantonment, and also people working in the area's IT parks.

Janab Shaikh Dawood and his brothers founded the mosque on 11 November 1889, and it passed to the Wakf Board in 1905. In 1984 the old building was pulled down and replaced with a new mosque, later enlarged to make room for Friday and Eid prayers. It is one of the few mosques where women may attend Eid prayers inside, with a separate space set aside for them. The community also runs outreach programmes, arranges marriages and keeps its own burial ground.
