The story

Borong is a village at about 5,800 feet near Ravangla in Namchi district (the former South Sikkim), developed as an eco-tourism stop. Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali families live side by side here, and the village has temples, monasteries and mosques within a short distance of one another.

Its best-known attraction is Borong Tsachu, a set of hot springs beside the Rangeet river whose water is believed to have healing properties. Trekkers use the village on the Damthang-Tendong-Ravangla-Maenam-Borong route, and the climb to Maenam peak is valued for sunrise over the snow ranges. The surrounding forest attracts birdwatchers, with species such as the scarlet minivet and various Himalayan pheasants. A riverbank festival is held in February, and Pang Lhabsol at nearby Ravangla falls in August or September. Gerang Monastery, Silver Falls and the Temi Tea Garden are within reach.
