The story

Borasu Pass, or Bara-su, crosses the Himalaya at 5,450 metres on the border between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, only a few kilometres from Tibet. It was once a trade route linking the Har Ki Doon valley with Kinnaur. On the Uttarakhand side the nearest village is Osla, in the Tons valley, while on the Himachal side Chitkul in the Baspa valley lies about 20 km away; the north-western slopes run down to the Jhukia Glacier.

Grasslands mark the approach, and from the top the view takes in Bandarpunch, Black Peak (Kalanag), Swargarohini and the Har Ki Doon peaks. Even in summer temperatures hover around freezing, and snow usually arrives after October. Rain is more common on the Tons side than in the drier Baspa valley.
