The story

Rupin Pass crosses the Himalaya at about 4,650 metres on an old shepherd route that starts at Dhaula in Uttarakhand and finishes at Sangla in Himachal's Kinnaur district. Most of the way runs through uninhabited country. Some sources link the Sarasvati glacier near the pass with the legendary Sarasvati river.

The trek is rated moderate to difficult. Trails are cut into rock faces and cross wooden bridges, dark gorges, glaciers, icy slopes and snowfields, with white rhododendrons and green meadows along the way, and the path follows the Rupin river up to the upper waterfall camp. Walkers start either from Gosangu, the last road head in Himachal, reached from Shimla via Rohru, or from Naitwar, reached from Dehradun via Dhaula. Both routes meet at Jhaka, a village clinging to the hillside that is the last place to restock. Melt from one side of the pass feeds the Yamuna, from the other the Sutlej.
