The story

Yamunotri Temple stands at about 3,291 metres in the western Garhwal Himalaya, in Uttarkashi district, and is one of the four shrines of the Char Dham pilgrimage. It is dedicated to the river goddess Yamuna, whose image here is carved in black marble. Snow and floods have destroyed the temple twice, and each time it has been rebuilt.

The shrine is open only in the warmer months: it opens on Akshaya Tritiya in May and closes for winter on Yama Dwitiya, two days after Diwali in November. Close by is a hot spring, reputedly hot enough to cook rice and potatoes in.
