01 — The story

The story

Gangotri Temple stands in the village of Gangotri in the Garhwal Himalayas and is one of the four Char Dham shrines. It is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is thought to be the highest temple to her. Legend says the river came down from heaven here when Lord Shiva let it loose from his hair.

The river itself rises at Gaumukh on the Gangotri glacier and flows as the Bhagirathi until the Alaknanda joins it near Devprayag, after which it is called the Ganga. A road reaches the village, and from there a 19 km trek crosses Gangotri National Park to Gaumukh, where blue sheep and snow leopards live. Trails also lead on to Tapovan, Nandanvan and Kedartal.
