The story

Bijoy Sagar, also called Mahadeb Dighi and sometimes spelt Bejoy Sagar, ranks among the biggest lakes of Udaipur in Tripura, measuring about 750 by 450 feet. Udaipur, earlier known as Rangamati, was the capital of Tripura until the 19th century, and its Manikya kings built many temples there and dug several lakes to beautify the city. Bijoy Sagar was excavated in the period between the reigns of Dhanya Manikya and Govinda Manikya.

The Tripureswar temple stands on its banks, and north of the lake two rock-cut lion figures are set into the ground before a Mahadev temple. Netaji Subhash Mahavidyalaya, the first college in Tripura, has occupied land beside the water since 1977. Houses crowd the shores, and residents rely on it for bathing, washing and fishing, though it also receives sewage from the neighbourhood.
