The story

Bibiyapur Kothi is a historic residence on the banks of the Gomti in Lucknow, named after the nearby village of Bibiyapur. Asaf-ud-Daula, Nawab of Awadh, had it built in the late 18th century in a neo-classical style, to designs by Antoine Polier. It served as a country retreat where the Nawab could get away from the pressures of the court, and because it was better furnished than his other residences, ladies of the royal court often came here.

The house stayed with the royal family after Asaf-ud-Daula died; at one point the British held Wazir Ali Khan here under house arrest. Once the Nawabs' rule ended, the British held military celebrations here. Protected status came in 1917, and it now lies within an army cantonment, run by the Indian Army, though the public may visit.
