The story

Christ Church stands in Hazratganj, Lucknow, east of the GPO. Designed by General Hutchinson and built in 1860 to commemorate those who died in the 1857 uprising, it was first known as the Church of England. Its plan forms a cross: the transepts either side of the nave represent Christ's arms and the chancel his head.

The Gothic building had twenty steeples and room for 130 worshippers. Marble tablets and brass plaques on its walls remember British officers, civilians and clergy who died in the conflict, among them James Grant Thomson, Deputy Commissioner of Muhamadee, and the Reverend Henry Polehampton. The church was enlarged in 1904; a belfry adjoins the southern transept, and the cross on its spire is reported to have been twisted by an earthquake in 1933. Stained-glass triptychs show figures of the Christian faith. The church also functions as a college: Christ Church College, now co-educational, traces its founding back to 1878.
