01 — The story

The story

Bhupatgad Fort stands on a northern spur of the hills running east from Jawhar, about 30 km from the town and 130 km from Thane, in Jawhar taluka of Palghar district. Little of its history is known. It served to watch the trade route between Trimbak and Wada and remained part of Jawhar princely state until 1947.

The villages of Kurlod and Zaap lie at its foot, and an easy one-hour trek from either reaches the top. The fort has lost its walls and bastions, but two ruined gates, a few rock-cut cisterns and statues of Mhasoba and Hanuman remain.
