The story

Bhaskargad, also called Basgad, is a hill fort in the Trimbak range of Nashik district, near Harihar Fort and about 48 km from Igatpuri, and a favourite with trekkers. It was built in the 13th century under the Yadavas of Devgiri, who held it from 1279 to 1308, and later passed to the Bahmanis, the Ahmadnagar Sultanate and the Mughals. Shahaji took it in 1629, Shivaji's general Moropant Trimbak Pingle won it from the Mughals in 1670, Koli rebels seized it in 1730, and the Peshwas held it until Captain Briggs captured it in 1818.

The base village, Dahalepada, is reached from Khodala or Igatpuri. A wide, safe path climbs through scrub forest to an open ridge and then traverses below the scarp to the rock-cut steps. The steps are carved into the rock in a helical shape, though half the way is now strewn with boulders. There is no water or shelter, so the fort cannot be used for a night stay.
