The story

The Shree Bhawani Waghjai Temple is in the village of Terav, Chiplun taluka, Ratnagiri district, and the state government has named it a tourist place of Maharashtra. Its origins are given variously, with the old temple said to be 350 years old and also dated to about 1860. Wear over the years led villagers to rebuild it, and in 2002 they formed a trust for the purpose. People working in cities gave a month's salary, retired people a month's pension, and farmers and workers Rs. 1,000 each. Work began on 14 May 2003.

The new temple is 123 feet long, with four sections for Bhawani, Waghjai, Kalkai, Navdurga and Lord Shiv Shankar, each topped by a South Indian style dome. The 55-foot dome above Bhawani rises over her 9-foot statue of black stone. A large hall holds about 2,000 people, and outside are seven gardens and a forest of big trees.
