The story

Rasalgad is a fort 15 km east of Khed, at the southern end of a narrow spur that runs north to Sumargad and Mahipatgad. Little of its history is known: Shivaji took it from the More clan of Javli, and British forces captured it from the Peshwas in 1818. It was declared a protected monument in 2003 and has been developed for tourism, its fortifications still in good condition.

The fort occupies a small triangular plateau of five acres, walled on every side, and is just a ten-minute climb from Rasalwadi village. Both entrance gates survive, with a Veer Maruti idol near the first. The Zolai Devi temple, with a stone deepmal and tulsi vrindavan in front, is a favourite night halt for trekkers. There are two large rock-cut cisterns, a storeroom and many cannons, two of which local volunteers recovered from the valleys below in 2022. Chakdev and Parvatgad can be seen from the fort, and weekends bring crowds.
