The story

Housed at Amber in Rajasthan, the privately run Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing is devoted to the craft of hand-block printing. It opened in 2005 as an initiative of the founders of Anokhi, the block-printed clothing brand, and the idea came from Pritam Singh and his wife, Rachel Bracken-Singh. It occupies Anokhi Haveli, a 16th-century mansion near Amber Fort, once called Chanwar Palkiwalon ki Haveli, which John Singh, Pritam's father, bought in a ruined state in the late 1970s. Its restoration from 1989 won a UNESCO heritage conservation award in 2000.

Over three floors, the displays trace the history, techniques and styles of block printing, and the museum lets visitors see a block printer or carver at work. Exhibits range from village dress from Balota to a case showing the 14 stages of Ajrakh dyeing from Gujarat, along with coats, bedcovers, wooden and iron blocks, chisels and drills, and garments from the Anokhi Archives going back to the 1970s.
