01 — The story

The story

Amber Fort, also called Amer Fort, crowns a rocky hill about 11 km from central Jaipur and was the residence of the rulers of Amer. Man Singh I commissioned it in 1592, and it is built of pale yellow and pink sandstone. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the busiest monuments in Rajasthan.

The climb leads through the Suraj Pol gate into Jaleb Chowk, a courtyard once used for army parades and for displaying spoils of war. The palace is laid out around four main courtyards, with the Diwan-e-Aam where the ruler heard petitions, the Sukh Niwas with a sandalwood door and water pipes for cooling, the Jas Mandir, the zenana and Man Singh's palace. The Sheesh Mahal is lined with thousands of small mirrors. Tunnels link the fort with Jaigarh Fort, and an evening light and sound show tells its history.
