The story

Amrapali Museum on Ashok Marg in Jaipur's C-Scheme opened on 20 January 2018. It was set up by Rajiv Arora and Rajesh Ajmera, college friends who founded Amrapali Jewels in 1978 and spent more than four decades collecting old jewellery and objects at a time when traditional designs were being melted down and lost. The museum shares its building with the company's headquarters and holds some 4,000 pieces, more than 800 of them on show.

The ground floor is devoted to beauty and adornment, with ornaments for every part of the body, from royal and temple pieces to tribal jewellery, drawn from most regions of India. The basement looks at the designs Indian craftsmen worked from, explaining styles such as tribal, Mughal, Rajput and temple jewellery, and shows silver objects from spittoons, rosewater sprinklers and betel sets to heavy shoe covers. A mid-20th-century chariot from Gujarat, covered in silver, greets visitors at the entrance. Some objects sit in drawers that light up as they open, and audio guides are available.
