01 — The story

The story

The Albert Hall Museum is a public museum in Jaipur, set in gardens of about 19 acres. Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II commissioned the building in 1868 and the British engineer Samuel Swinton Jacob designed it, combining Indian, Islamic and Gothic elements. It takes its name from Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, who laid the foundation stone in 1876, and Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II opened it to the public in 1887.

Built of sandstone and marble in a pinkish tone, it has stone elephants at the entrance, a courtyard with a fountain, murals and stained glass. Its 16 galleries display around 20,000 objects, including miniatures, sculpture, textiles, arms, pottery, jewellery and coins, plus a Jaipur School of Art gallery. Highlights are an Egyptian mummy and a rare Persian garden carpet. The facade is lit in colour every night.
