Amrabad Tiger Reserve covers more than 2,611 square kilometres of southern Telangana, across Nagarkurnool and Nalgonda districts. First notified as a sanctuary in 1983, it was declared India's 45th tiger reserve in 2015, after Telangana became a separate state. It ranks second among India's tiger reserves by core area and sixth by total area.
The reserve is part of the Nallamala forest in the Eastern Ghats, a forest it has in common with the neighbouring Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve. Its land falls in the Amrabad, Achampet and Nagarjuna Sagar forest divisions. Several perennial streams that rise inside the reserve flow into the Krishna, helping to fill the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar reservoirs.
