Vishansar Lake, the lake of Vishnu, lies at 3,710 metres in Ganderbal district, in the high country above Sonamarg. It is about 1 km long and 0.6 km wide and holds religious meaning for Kashmiri Pandits. Krishansar Lake and nearby glaciers feed it, and it in turn gives rise to the Kishanganga River, which flows north to Badoab and then west through Gurez.
The water freezes over in winter. In summer the shore is surrounded by green alpine meadows where shepherds bring their sheep and goats to graze, and brown trout swim in the lake. It is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the Kashmir Valley, and Gadsar Lake lies about 9 km to the west over the Gadsar Pass.
