Krishansar Lake, the lake of Krishna, lies at 3,710 metres in Ganderbal district, less than a kilometre northwest of Vishansar Lake, into which it drains. It is about 0.95 km long and 0.6 km wide, fed by snow and glacier melt, and home to brown trout. Behind it rise snowy mountains crossed by the Gadsar Pass, the way on to Gadsar Lake about 9 km away.
In summer shepherds bring sheep and goats to graze the green meadows around the shore; in winter the lake freezes and heavy snow makes it unreachable. It is a well-known trekking destination. Walkers drive from Srinagar along NH 1D to Shitkadi near Sonamarg, then trek about 35 km, a full day, over the 4,100-metre Nichnai Pass; ponies can be hired for the climb.
