The story

Tirusoolanathar Temple, also called Tirusoolanathar Tripurasundari Temple, is a Shiva temple at Tirusulam, a suburb of Chennai. The name is linked to the Trichuram family, who ruled the area. The temple is credited to the Chola king Kulothunga I and was later renovated by Sundara Chola; its walls carry inscriptions of the Cholas and Pandyas, from the 11th century, and some from the Pallava period.

Shiva faces east and the goddess Thirupurasundari faces south. Inside the main sanctum, beside Thirusoolanathar, is another image of Thirupurasundari that was damaged by invaders. Stories cling to the place: Kulothunga I is said to have hidden treasure somewhere nearby, and a tunnel is said to run beneath the temple to Panchapandava's Hills nearby, site of the king's palace.
