The story

Kundrathur Murugan Temple stands on a hill in Kundrathur, a suburb of Chennai. Hindu tradition says Murugan stopped on this hill while travelling from Tiruporur to Tiruttani after defeating the demons, setting up a Shiva linga and worshipping it; that Shiva is honoured here as Kandaleeswarar in a separate shrine. Because Murugan faces north, towards Thanigai, the place is also called South Thanigai, and it is said that no other Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu has him standing towards the north.

The temple was built by the Chola king Kulothunga II. A notable feature is the way the image is placed: although both consorts stand with him, Murugan can be seen with only one at a time, with Valli from one side and with Deivayanai from the other.
