The story

Tirunettur Mahadeva Temple stands at Vyttila in Ernakulam district on a compound of 5.5 acres. It has two main deities in separate temple complexes, both facing east: Shiva in the form of Sri Rudra, believed to be among Kerala's 108 Shiva temples, installed by Parashurama, and Vishnu as Vaikundeswara, whose temple is said to have been built on the advice of Vilwamangalam Swamiyar. There is also a Krishna temple, and Ganapathy, Subrahmanya, Saraswati and other deities are worshipped.

The buildings are in the Kerala style; the nalambalam around the Shiva temple is complete on all four sides, while Vishnu's is only half built. The temple is well known for Karkidaka Vavu, the new-moon day of Karkidakam, when many people come to the Vishnu temple to offer bali to their ancestors. The eight-day festival in Dhanu, shared by both temples since each has a flagmast, ends with the arattu on Thiruvathira, and Shivarathri and Ashtami Rohini are also celebrated.
