Willingdon Island was formed in 1936 from material dredged during construction of the modern port of Kochi, reclaiming land from the backwaters. It is described as the largest man-made island in India and takes its name from Lord Willingdon, a former Viceroy. The British administration planned it as a shipping and trade base.
Today it is a commercial and industrial district. The Port of Kochi operates here, alongside shipping firms, cargo yards, warehouses and hotels. The island also has the Kochi Naval Base and the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, and ferries and boat trips run around it.
